The U.S. Amateur begins Monday at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado. The event is amateur golf's crown jewel and a highlight of the summer schedule.
This year, 1o players from New England will tee it up. The event consists of a 36-hole stroke play qualifier where players will compete at Cherry Hills and co-host Colorado Golf Club. The low 64 players will advance to match play in hopes of winning the Havermeyer Trophy.
Last year, Michael Thorbjornsen (Wellesley, Mass.) won co-medalist honors with three other players after shooting 3-under par at Ridgewood CC and Arcola CC in New Jersey. His run was stopped by Andrew Von Lossow in the Round of 32. Ben James (Milford, Conn.) and Chris Francoeur (Amesbury, Mass.), who turned pro right after the event, also reached the Round of 32 last year.
On Wednesday, Thornbjornsen announced that he would not be playing in the US Amateur and the Walker Cup due to a stress fracture in his back.
Let's meet the players from New England in the 2023 U.S. Amateur.
