As work weeks go let’s chalk it up as a very productive one for former University of Rhode Island golf standout Justin Thompson.
Not only did he get through a U.S. Open local qualifier for just the second time in his annual quest, but a few days later he started a new job as General Manager / Director of Golf at a dynamic still-under-construction golf club in Martin County, Fla. Called Sandglass Golf Club, it is owned by Chris Shumway of Stamford, Conn. (investor and founder of Shumway Capital), and the heralded Tom Doak is the architect.
First, Thompson’s golf performance at Wellington National GC in Wellington, Fla. “I try every year. It is my $200 annual donation to the USGA,” laughed the former URI standout (class of 2001). “The best part is, I get a bag tag.”
Correction, the best part is, he can book his trip to the 36-hole U.S. Open Final Qualifying in a bid to make into the major show at Pinehurst June 13-16.
