HAMPDEN, Mass. — GreatHorse proved a challenge and a stunning venue for the Mass. Division 1 championships. After it was postponed from Monday to Tuesday due to rain, a classic fall New England day welcomed the competitors.
For 18 holes, GreatHorse asks plenty of questions. Driving accurately is important, but hitting greens is the key to scoring, as deep bunkers and tight chipping areas can expose the nerves of the best high school golfers in the state.
In the end, Ryan Downes did what he's been doing for the last 16 months – win. The Mass. Amateur champion and defending Division 1 champion took advantage of his intimate knowledge of a course where his father is the head pro. Now he's the two-time defending champion in Division 1.
