AUBURNDALE, Mass. – Can you script an old story when you’re just 17 and haven’t even started your senior year in high school?
Semantical question, perhaps, but frankly, what does it matter because Ryan Downes of Longmeadow, Mass., continues to be a young man piling up impressive feats in a hurry. A month after becoming the youngest to ever win the Massachusetts Amateur, Downes pretty much confirmed that he is the real deal by shooting 4-under 67 Friday to successfully defend his title in the annual Ouimet Memorial at Woodland GC.
“Back-to-back,” smiled Downes, who finished at 10-under 201 to win by five. “But it feels a little better the second time.”
