When the Quinnipiac women rallied from six strokes back to overtake the University of North Carolina at Ashville and win the Low Country Intercollegiate, head coach John O’Connor felt a sense of vindication for the faith he has in his team.
“Coming off back-to-back (Metro-Atlantic Athletic) Conference championship wins, I kind of expect to win everything we compete in – though it’s not realistic,” said O’Connor.
Still, he's given it a pretty good run much of the season, dating back to the fall. The Bobcats had finished second twice and fourth another time, so the momentum appeared to be building for what happened at Moss Creek GC on Hilton Head, Island.
Led by a pair of California golfers – Leeyen Peraldo of Cornelia and Fuge Zhang of Torrance – Quinnipiac outscored Ashville, 302-309, in the second round to eke out a one-stroke victory. Peralta shot 81-71 and tied with Zhang (77-75) for third place. Aime Yoshida fot 77-79 and was T-13.
