Michael Thorbjornsen is entering his senior year at Stanford. After three successful seasons with the Cardinal along with excellent performances in elite amateur and professional events, the Wellesley, Mass., native who's No. 2 amateur in the world, according to the World Amateur Golf Rankings, will begin the college season with the top ranking in the PGA Tour University standings.
In his junior year, Thorbjornsen recorded two college victories. He won the Fighting Illini Invitational and the Pac-12 Championship. His steady play through the season locked up a spot on the Ping First-Team All-America team, along with winning Pac-12 Golfer of the Year.
At age 21, Thorbjornsen has already qualified for the U.S. Open three times (2019, 2022, 2023) and has made the cut three times in PGA Tour tournaments. He finished in fourth place at the 2022 Travelers Championship. He was also the 36-hole leader of the Dubai Desert Classic.
Due to his WAGR ranking, Thorbjornsen, along with Gordon Sargent and David Ford, was named to the Walker Cup team that will play against Great Britain and Ireland on Sept. 2-3 in St. Andrews at the Old Course. The rest of the 10-man team will be named in the coming month.
