The ride ended for the two young Massachusetts golfers in the U.S. Women’s Amateur on Tuesday.
Emma Abramson and Molly Smith both failed to qualify for match play in the tournament at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.
Abramson lost in a playoff after shooting 73-77. She entered an eight-for-four scramble to make the match play field.
She survived the first hole despite a bogey, but was eliminated after the second. Before the playoff, a seven on the par-5 fifth hole and a bogey on her final hole, a par-3, hurt her push to make the match-play field.
Last week, Abramson won the Mass. Girls Junior Amateur.
Smith, at 77-75 in the two stroke play rounds, was two shots off the pace for the playoff. She had a strong start on Tuesday, birdieing her opening hole — like she did in Round 1 — and shooting a 1-under 35 on her first nine holes. But Smith carded a 6 twice during her second nine holes Tuesday.
It was the third career appearance in the U.S. Women’s Amateur for Smith, from Westford Academy, and the first for Abramson, from Sandwich High School.
