For those who became enamored with the Conner Willett Story at last week’s Massachusetts State Amateur – and likely that is a long line of fans – it didn’t take long for the saga to pick up where it left off: With Willett showing his grit and rich character and playing on against adversity.
Teeing it up Monday in the New England Amateur at Alpine CC in Cranston, R.I., just two days after a funeral for his father, Rick, and three days following his stunning victory in the 114th annual Massachusetts Amateur, the Georgetown sophomore double-bogeyed his fourth hole, the par-4 13th, and followed with bogeys at 14 and 15.
Out in 5-over 40, no one could have blamed Willett for being out of gas after the incredible emotions of last week at Concord Country Club.
But Willett saved his best for his second nine on Monday.
