NEWPORT, R.I. — At a blustery, challenging, and beautiful Newport CC, Belmont Hill staked its claim as the king of ISL golf as it collected the Kingman Cup with a team score of 307. St. George's was the runner-up, six shots off the pace. CJ Winchenbaugh of Belmont Hill captured the individual title with an impressive 67.
While the Belmont Hill squad collected their trophies, they were also awarded the regular season trophy after nearly running the table all spring. After going undefeated last season, they dropped just a half-point this year when they tied one match. In coach Charlie Doar's memory, it's the first time Belmont Hill has had possession of both trophies at the same time.
That's quite a two-year stretch, and it doesn't seem like Belmont Hill is ready to relinquish its stranglehold on the ISL. Doar won't lose a single player to graduation this year. Considering he lost six seniors last year, this year was supposed to be a rebuilding year.
"This year, we had a lot of open spots, and we didn't really know what to expect," Winchenbaugh said. "We pulled it together, especially on some off days we ham-and-egged it pretty well. If someone wasn't playing well, we picked it up with some good golf."
