NEWTON, Mass. – For the first time in three years, New England prep school girls golf champions were crowned on Monday.
The 36th annual Pippy O’Connor Independent School Girls Golf Championship, hosted this year by Woodland Golf Club, featured an individual battle that wasn’t settled until the final holes and a team competition that was claimed by Greenwich Academy.
On a sunny, windy day on a historic course that can claim three former U.S. Amateur champions as members, the individual prize went to a freshman, Yvette O’Brien of Greenwich Academy, who came in playing well and said she had designs on contending.
“I definitely did,” said O’Brien, who at 7-over 79 was the only golfer to break 80. “That was one of my goals. I had a tournament this past weekend and I was comfortable with my swing.”
