PROVIDENCE — Every golf course has a spirit, evident from the moment someone pulls into the driveway. A long, winding road offers a sense of solitude and separation. Augusta’s Magnolia Lane delivers golfers from chain restaurant-laden Washington Road to one of the most revered golf courses in the world. It’s not a long drive, but it’s enough to let a golfer enter a new mindset and soak up the spirit of the course and the property.
Pulling off of busy Chalkstone Avenue and into Triggs Memorial does the same. Yes, the buildings look a little worse for wear, and the parking lot is dotted with potholes. However, the lot is also full of golfers pulling their bags out of their car, meeting up with their regulars for nine or 18 holes.
They readily share their sense of pride for their public course tucked in the northwest corner of Rhode Island’s capital city. Triggs is a welcoming place, brimming with pride. Joe, the starter, runs a tight ship, but he does it with a smile on his face.
He’s worked in the golf industry for much of his life.
