Michael Thorbjornsen begins match play at the U.S. Amateur with a share of the medal but a bad taste in his mouth.
One of the best players this week at The Ridgewood Country Club and Arcola CC in Paramus, N.J., Thorbjornsen (Wellesley, Mass.) made a double-bogey on his final hole on Tuesday to finish with an even-par 70.
That, coupled with Monday’s opening 68 at Ridgewood, left him at 3-under and in a four-way tie for first place with Fred Biondi of Brazil; Luke Gutschewski of Elkhorn, Neb.; and Hugo Townsend of Sweden.
Thorbjornsen is one of four players from New England moving on to the 64-player match play part of the event, which begins later today. He is slated to tee off at 2 p.m. against an opponent still to be determined.
