Mark Plummer is regarded as the greatest Maine golfer ever. He’s won 13 Maine Amateur championships over the course of four decades. His first came in 1973 and his last came in 2002. He won three amateur championships in a row twice. He did it first from 1982-1984 and then again from 2000-2002. He was 50 when he claimed his 13th title.
Plummer also won six Maine Senior Amateurs. Incredibly, Plummer has won a Maine Golf title in six different decades. He won the Maine Junior in 1969 and the Maine Senior in 2019.
For all his victories and dominance in the state of Maine, Plummer is most well known nationally for his performance in the U.S. Amateur in 1995 at Newport CC in Rhode Island. At the age of 43, he reached the semifinals against Tiger Woods and pushed their match to the 18th hole with friends, family, and the nation watching.
NBC golf analyst Johnny Miller said Plummer’s homegrown swing looked like he was “out watering the lawn” during the broadcast.
