NEWPORT, R.I. — On Monday, Newport CC hosted the Independent School League for the Kingman Cup. The 18-hole, stroke-play event is culminating event of the ISL season. During the spring, teams compete in match play, so the Kingman Cup is a way for teams to prove their talent in a different way. Each team brings five players and the four best scores from each team count towards the total.
After a dominant regular season for Belmont Hill, the school won the Kingman Cup to solidifying its supremacy. Milton Academy came in as the defending champion, a perfect example of a team that can surprise opponents. They have developed into a strong team under coach Joe McMann's leadership.
"It doesn't get much better than Newport Country Club," Belmont Hill coach Charlie Doar said. "We've been fortunate to have some great sites for this tournament over the years."
He's not lying. Renaissance was the 2022 host. Concord Country Club and George Wright have also hosted in recent years.
Great courses help separate the field, and Newport CC did that both among the teams and individuals. Belmont Hill junior CJ Winchenbaugh (Weston, Mass.) shot a 67 to win medalist honors.
Here are some pictures of the competitors battling the wind, the golf course, and each other on Monday in the Kingman Cup.
