Morgan Smith refused to say die. And now she can say she’s a Massachusetts Women’s Amateur champion.
Smith, 18, who plays out of Vesper CC, won the last three holes to overtake Rebecca Skoler (Pine Brook Country Club) in the championship match on Friday at The Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, 1-up.
The Westford, Mass., resident, who will be doing a postgraduate year at Phillips Exeter Academy, earned medalist honors this week and then won five matches, but Friday’s was by far the closest.
She became the first woman to win the Mass. Amateur and the New England Amateur in the same year since Shannon Johnson in 2018, and her victory came exactly 50 years after another Westford native – LPGA Hall of Famer Pat Bradley – won this event.
