Morgan Smith posted one of the first scores on the opening day of the New England Women's Amateur on Monday, and it was a good one.
Smith, an 18-year-old who plays out of Vesper Country Club, was the only golfer in the field to break par on Day 1 at the Country Club of Vermont in Waterbury Center, Vt. Her 3-under 69 gives her a four-shot lead heading into Tuesday's second round of the 54-hole stroke play event.
Smith endured an up-and-down front nine that saw her bogey three straight holes before sizzling on the back, where she made three birdies and no bogeys.
Her closest pursuer is University of Maryland golfer Angela Garvin (Feeding Hills, Mass.), who plays out of The Ranch GC and shot 73.
