Even with a short golf season in New England, the region never ceases to generate incredible stories and excellent golf. During 2022, New England was host to some record-breaking performances. The USGA came to Massachusetts twice, first for the U.S. Open in June and then for the U.S. Senior Amateur in August. Both provided worthy winners at superb venues.
A Georgetown sophomore, Conner Willett, experienced heartbreak off the course and somehow, someway, used it as fuel to push himself all the way to the Massachusetts Amateur title. Massachusetts golfers were also on display on the national stage. A kid from Wellesley with a bright future and a mid-am who recently returned to the amateur ranks have USGA medals hanging somewhere prominent in their house — or in their dorm room at Stanford.
A kid from Nevada stormed Wannamoisett CC for a second time in a row, setting records on the way to winning the Northeast Amateur — one of the most coveted trophies in amateur golf.
We'll be so lucky if we have so many stories to choose from in 2023. What a year it's been.
Here are the most memorable moments, performances, and characters from the year in golf in New England.
