CRANSTON, R.I. – There’s nothing like rolling a few more warm-up putts before your final-round tee time as the co-leader only to catch the buzz getting louder.
Jared Nelson out of Rutland CC in Vermont concedes it got his attention Wednesday at the New England Amateur at Alpine Country Club.
“I heard he (Christian Emmerich) was something like 9-under through 12 (holes),” said Nelson, who wasn’t about to do the math, though folks did it for him. Emmerich, starting in a tie for 44th and nine off the lead, was now 6-under and tied with Nelson.
A soon-to-be fifth-year senior at the University of Connecticut, Nelson merely nodded because it confirmed his thoughts. “I knew right then I had to go out and be aggressive.”
