Last August, Merrimack's women's golf coach Jason Malcolm received a call from the college's athletic director, Jeremy Gibson. He had some exciting news: Merrimack would be adding a men’s Division 1 golf program. And it would start in the fall.
In one phone call, Malcolm went from coaching one college team to two, and one of them had an empty roster.
Merrimack doesn’t get much national recognition for its athletics. That can make recruiting a challenge.
But in short order, Malcolm rounded up a squad of six freshman boys to launch the men’s golf program. They hail from all over the country. Two of them are from Massachusetts — JR Robinson (Worcester) and Tony Novack (Middleton). The other four come from various parts of North America.
