On those rare occasions when you come across someone who actually put the emphasis on the front end of the term Student-Athlete, you are at first stymied. Then you hear Jake Bauer explain all that went into his decision to switch gears on his pro golf career and you are duly impressed.
To discover your purpose in life and re-discover a passion for golf is quite the achievement.
“I just felt like I had a bigger purpose, that my time (could be better served),” said Bauer. “For the health of my career, I needed to be in a comfortable position.”
Bauer was speaking in the aftermath of an impressive round of golf on May 3, his 5-under 67 at LeBaron Hills Country Club in Lakeville, Mass., earning co-medalist honors at a U.S. Open local qualifier.
The personable native of Portsmouth, R.I., laughed when told that his success at LeBaron prompted some research to discover more about his story. He totally understood, conceding that his was a unique route, but one that he gladly talked about.
