So classes are done for the semester and students are free to head back home for Christmas, right? Not so quick if you’re a quality collegiate golfer, because there are tournaments to partake in.
The South Beach International is held at both Miami Beach GC and Normandy Shores GC. Players compete over 72 holes for this coveted winter trophy. Luke Clanton, a Florida native and Florida State freshman, won the event in a playoff over 14-year-old Henry Guan. Clanton also won the North & South Amateur this summer at Pinehurst; it's one of seven events in the Elite Amateur Series.
Meanwhile, the 11th annual Mid-Pines Amateur got under way Monday at a pair of Donald Ross gems in the sandhills of North Carolina – Mid-Pines and Southern Pines. 18-year-old Jonathan Honeywell, Whispering Pines, N.C., won the 54-hole event in a playoff against J.J. Zimmer, Union University. This was the first year the event was known as the Mid-Pines Amateur. It was previously called the CCNC Amateur.
