Carys Fennessy has staked her claim as the best female golf in the state, junior or otherwise. Her dominant 15-shot win the New Hampshire Women’s Amateur was a dazzling display. It’s not easy playing with such a big lead. She was able to build on the lead with every passing round.
After winning her second New Hampshire girls' state championship last October as a sophomore, she said that she aims to win the tournament two more times before graduating.
Last year was the first time the state championship was held over 36 holes at two different courses. The first round was on Thursday at Campbell’s Scottish Links and the final round was at Beaver Meadow on Saturday. In another sign of Fennessy’s strong mental game, she held a two-shot lead after the opening round and recovered from a bogey-bogey start in the next to play the last 16 holes in 1-under par. She ran away with the event by nine shots.
It feels like the championship is very much Fennessy’s to lose over the next two years. June Doerr, who has finished runner-up twice in three attempts, would love to finish her senior golf season with a state title, but it will take exceptional golf to dethrone Fennessy.
